About Cathy: Your Alexander Technique Teacher
Cathy completed her 1,600-hour AmSAT training course in Chico, CA in 1994. AmSAT-certified teachers must complete 1,600 hours of training over at least three years. From 2018–2020, she served as co-director of her own training course in Salt Lake City, Utah. To date, she has been teaching for over 30 years, working with both private students and groups of all kinds, ranging in size from 8 to 400 people. She has enjoyed teaching music groups (including children), vocalists, runners, dancers and other athletes, office workers, medical professionals, seniors, and many others.
Cathy's interest in the Alexander Technique began while she was studying the martial art of Aikido. One of her Aikido partners had just completed her Alexander training in San Francisco and was eager to teach. Cathy soon became the lucky recipient of some Alexander lessons. She had always been very physical and kinesthetic as a child — participating in many sports, skateboarding, bicycling, playing soccer, studying ballet, skiing, and generally always running around. As an adult, it became apparent to her that the way she conducted herself in physical activities was too forceful. She used too much effort and energy, which often ended in injuries. She soon realized that this was her M.O. — the way she moved through the world. Perhaps being the smallest of all the kids made her feel like she had to try harder. She does remember having an excess of energy — not such a bad trait if used wisely.
The Alexander Technique taught Cathy to let go of the unnecessary extra effort she was using. Force turned to flow, more grace, more directed strength and coordination, and fewer injuries. All of the amazing changes brought about from her lessons fascinated her, and she decided to train to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique. To this day, she continues to apply the technique to work and play, augmenting her practice with meditation. Her tendency is to move too fast, so slowing down is her ongoing practice. She particularly loves applying the principles of the technique to backcountry skiing and cycling.
